Call for performers!
www.fragile-global-performance.net
The action:
One object will be passed from performance artist to performance artist, travelling so all around the whole globe. The STARTING POINT of the object will be Florence, Italy, out of the hands of VestAndPage in winter 2010.The object will be carried (by foot, train, car, ship, horse,….) to the next-by assigned performance neighbour’s place. The carrying/transporting itself shall be a performance: Every single performance artist in hold of the object chooses the personal “performance”, way and style of carrying the object to the neighbour. The object should be used but not harmed or voluntarily visually changed throughout the journey.

Performance Artists can register = travel = transport the object = perform alone, together, in pairs or in groups.

Event/Festival/Encounter organizers are invited to integrate the FRAGILE global performance chain journey into their program, in case the object shall pass by their city in time of event.

Participating performers shall document on photo and text their journey/performance. The material will be published on the webpagewww.fragile-global-performance.net where the mapping of the object’s movement, its carriers and their performance-travel experiences can be followed.

After the successful return of the object to Florence, Italy, a documentation-book will be produced with a double-page for each performer’s picture and text.

Art & Artificial Life International Competition
Fundación Telefónica Madrid/Spain

At a time when the notion of life is once again located in an uncertain domain, a wide range of artistic initiatives come together to illustrate and investigate this phenomenon; they examine the impact on the collective conscience and the way it is manifested in cultural, technological and social thought.

Over the last decade, in the same formal space, VIDA has been bringing together inter-disciplinary projects that respond to this situation. By means of formal strategies that defy the boundaries between existing practices, these projects offer new ways of reflecting on what we understand by life and artificial life.

Fundación Telefónica announces the VIDA 13.0 Art & Artificial Life International Competition, which for the last twelve years has awarded prizes for artistic projects using technological mediums offering innovative approaches to research into artificial life.

The projects may be based on systems which emulate, imitate or speculate on the notion of life through current research and technology. These systems may involve attributes of agency and autonomy which display specific behaviour, are dynamic, react to their surroundings and evolve, and which question the frontiers between what is alive and what is not, between synthetic and organic life.

As in previous years there are two categories to the competition:
FINISHED PROJECTS

In this category VIDA 13.0 will award prizes to artistic ALife projects developed after 2008. The sum of 40,000 Euros will be shared between the projects selected by the jury: First Prize: 18,000 Euros, Second Prize: 14,000 Euros, and Third Prize: 8,000 Euros. In addition seven honourable mentions will be awarded.
ARTISTIC PRODUCTION INCENTIVES IN IBEROAMERICA, SPAIN AND PORTUGAL

In this category VIDA 13.0 helps to fund artistic ALife projects that have not yet been produced. This is aimed at citizens or residents of countries comprising Latin America, Spain and Portugal. The sum of 40,000 Euros will be shared between the selected projects.
The winning projects will be subsequently exhibited at the VIDA Gallery,

http://www.fundacion.telefonica.com/arteytecnologia/galeriavida/.
and may be presented in exhibitions related to art and new technologies organised by Fundación Telefónica or in which it takes part.

DATES

Period for submission of projects: from 19th July to 7th November 2010.
JURY

The works submitted will be examined by an international panel composed of José-Carlos Mariátegui (Peru), Mónica Bello Bugallo (Spain), Nell Tenhaaf (Canada) Rodrigo Alonso (Argentina), Simon Penny (USA/Australia), Zhan Ga (China) and Francisco Serrano (General Director of Fundación Telefónica).

GIGUK is a non-profit Festival with a very small budget so unfortunately we can’t offer artistic fees, accomodation or travel expenses.
We are unable to accept deliveries which do not have the full postage required.

JURY CRITERIA
As the festival is open for productions of different kind, works have to be judged that often can hardly be compared. This problem would not be solved by establishing categories (like “animition” or “political”), as many videos would belong to more then one of these.
Therefore the jury decided to define “focal points”. They are not exclusive, and the jury will look in each case at the other aspects too. But they give the chance to determine the juries’ main focus for each work. So one of these focal points MUST be named by the author for his work:
– visual experience
– social, political or ethical statement
– narrative process
– coherence between the visual and auditive part
– conceptual aspect (i.e. integration in art discourses)

The jury will applicate these criteria in judging the videos:
Originality of idea or concept
Sense for composition and sense for rhythm
Quality of the narration (if there is a narrative dimension in the work)
Adequacy of time and effort in production and technique and relationship between production quality and intention: Neither a low effort nor a low production quality are generally negative, if they are handled in a conscious way or if they are conceptually not important to a work. On the other hand of course high quality can be important if the work’s concept needs them. But perfection alone doesn’t impress us.
Utilization of time (only for the OneMinutes): how precise has been worked with this short time span?
